From 1978 to 1990, she worked as a secondary school English teacher in Khartoum, contributing to education and cultural awareness.

حصلت مكي على درجة البكالوريوس في الأدب الإنجليزي من جامعة الملك عبد العزيز بجدة عام 1978. كما نالت دبلومًا في تدريس اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية، ودبلومًا عاليًا في الفلكلور من جامعة الخرطوم.

عملت في الفترة بين 1978 إلى 1990 كمعلمة لغة إنجليزية في المدارس الثانوية بمدينة الخرطوم، مسهمة بذلك في دعم التعليم والوعي الثقافي.
